Lighting Design and Installation in 2016
One of the largest and well known providers of lighting solutions and once giant electronics company Philips will be deciding whether to put the lighting arm of its business on the stock market or whether it will sell it outright. Some of you may remember a time when Philips represented the cutting edge of electronics and introduced many advancements such as the “radiorecorder”, which would later be known as the boombox, the world’s first home video cassette recorder (or VHS/Video Recorder), laserdiscs and more recent modern formats that were developed along with Sony such as CDs and Blu-ray. While Philips might not be at the forefront of home entertainment anymore, it still holds some sway in domestic and commercial electronics, and its lighting sector has been quite successful.
While at Lektron we will always ensure that we can find the right parts and products for you, we feel that it would be positive to see a company that in the past has played such a large role in British electronics continue to operate. Regardless of whether they do, we’ll still endeavour to provide you with a specialist lighting solution that works for you and your business. In this article we’ll look at a few of the lighting services that we offer, and how some lighting solutions might best benefit you.
Bespoke Lighting Design
Our team at Lektron have a wealth of experience in almost every aspect of electrical design, installation and maintenance imaginable, and over the past 25 years or so we have worked with clients from a wide range of different sectors and know that every business will have specific needs and requirements that need to be met that are specific to them and their circumstances. Because of this our electrical design team will work closely with you to ascertain what you specifically need to perform as a business, and this will take into account the type of business you do, aspects of your premises and your operating hours. We will use this, along with your requests, to compile a bespoke solution for your lighting that will include suggestions from our experienced team who may be able to come up with a beneficial solution that you have yet to consider.
Unfortunately there are some people who will take advantage of a lack of lighting for nefarious means, and at this time of year when daylight is minimal, there are some places where there won’t be adequate lighting in working hours, and for businesses that operate outside of the usual 9 to 5 hours daylight is rarely seen. While security lighting doesn’t provide a sure-fire way to deter people who have activities that are detrimental to your business of premises, it can act as a deterrent, as motion activated lighting can dissuade people from doing anything that they shouldn’t. Security lighting doesn’t have to be motion activated and can be triggered by light sensitive sensors, or can be placed on a timer to go off at a time of the day that is beneficial to you.
Security lighting can have the added benefit of providing a level of safety to your employees, beyond the obvious deterrent of anyone who may harm them. Lighting triggered by motion sensors can be highly beneficial for those who are approaching entrances and exits as it allows them to easily and safely see their means for entry and their key, pass card or any other item they need to gain access clearly. Once again this task could be fulfilled by light activated or timed lighting, and in addition to making life easier for your employees, such lighting can serve to give them further peace of mind about how safe the area they work in is.
Some premises and types of business are required to provide emergency lighting, and this can be to clearly show where exits are in the event of a fire or other catastrophe, as well as act as a backup in the event that regular lighting fails. At Lektron we can provide you with a fully designed, installed and maintained emergency lighting solution that is BS 5266 compliant, and this can be integrated into your fire alarm systems, as well as your Building Management System (BMS) if necessary.
While there is an initial outlay to installing a new lighting system in your premises, more often than not there is a long term financial benefit to installing money saving lighting solutions. The most obvious of these is to install energy efficient lighting that utilises Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) or other equivalents. According to the Energy Saving Trust a CFL bulb can save you approximately £3 a year as opposed to a traditional light bulb of the same brightness, and when you spread this saving across an entire business the savings can soon add up.
Motion activated lighting can also provide an effective way to reduce your lighting costs in instances where areas of your premises or business are not in constant operation. Motion sensors can placed wherever you please, and mean that lights will only be activated when a particular room is in use, which means that when it isn’t you don’t have to worry about lights being left on for no reason. If there are areas of your business that will always be used at specific times of the day a timed solution can also be implemented to make savings on your lighting bill.
Almost all of our lighting systems can be integrated into a buildings control or BMS system, meaning that from a single console you can have complete control over the lighting in your premises. This can be ideal for larger organisations that have large premises that are continuously monitored, as they’ll be able to override any existing automated or human controlled systems, and adapt the lighting manually to your individual needs. A well installed and maintained BMS can be essential when it comes to managing your fire alarm and emergency lighting systems.
As with anything electrical, it’s advisable to put a regular schedule in place for the routine testing and inspection of your lighting systems so that any potential issues with your infrastructure can be identified before a problem occurs. This is particularly important when it comes to your emergency lighting systems as you want to be sure that in the event that you require it, it will be operating as intended. It’s also advisable to put in place a system of regular maintenance for your lighting system to ensure simple tasks to ensure that it runs smoothly are completed.
